Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Debuts to Strong Reviews After Years of Franchise Fatigue
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched Oct. 23 from developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision, the 23rd mainline entry in the long-running shooter series and the fourth and final chapter in the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline that began in 2019. It debuted to a "Generally Favorable" 86 on Metacritic across 18 critic reviews, with outlets praising the campaign's pacing and stakes, and it posted a 90 percent positive rating across more than 1,800 Steam user reviews, among the best-received Call of Duty launches on that platform since 2015's Black Ops III. The game includes a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and the returning extraction mode DMZ, and it marks the series' first mainline release on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
The case for:
Critics are calling this campaign one of the strongest the series has produced in years, closing out the rebooted Modern Warfare story with real emotional weight.
The overwhelmingly positive early Steam numbers suggest Infinity Ward actually addressed what longtime fans wanted, from multiplayer pacing to a tighter DMZ loop.
The case against:
It's still a $70 yearly sequel in a franchise plenty of players feel has been coasting since the original Modern Warfare trilogy.
Some early reviewers flagged a slower multiplayer pace that longtime fans are still adjusting to, and launch-week hype for Call of Duty games has faded before once the post-launch grind sets in.

This is the first Call of Duty campaign in years I actually wanted to finish in one sitting. It finally feels like Infinity Ward cared about closing out the story instead of just shipping another map pack with a new coat of paint.
