Anne Hathaway's 'Verity' Adaptation Splits Colleen Hoover Fans Ahead of Its Oct. 2 Release
"Verity," Amazon MGM Studios' adaptation of Colleen Hoover's 2018 psychological thriller, hits theaters October 2 with Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett leading a cast directed by Michael Showalter. The novel became a BookTok sensation for its dark turn away from Hoover's usual romance formula, following a struggling writer who moves into a bestselling author's home to ghostwrite her unfinished series and uncovers a disturbing manuscript along the way. It's the fourth Hoover book brought to the screen after 2024's "It Ends With Us," which grossed $351 million worldwide despite mixed reviews, and 2025's "Regretting You," a smaller hit that fared worse with critics. Early reactions out of advance screenings have been sharply split, with some viewers calling it one of the stronger Hoover adaptations yet and others panning the pacing and tone.
The case for:
Hoover's fanbase has turned prior adaptations into box office hits even when critics were lukewarm, and pairing that built-in audience with a starrier cast could do the same here.
Darker, twistier material than her romance-heavy earlier books gives the film room to stand out from "It Ends With Us" and "Regretting You" instead of repeating them.
The case against:
Early reactions are split enough that some early viewers are already calling it the weakest Hoover adaptation to date.
Squeezing a slow-burn, 324-page psychological thriller into a two-hour runtime risks losing the tension that made the book a bestseller.
