Petition to Remove Pink as UNICEF Ambassador Tops 150,000 Signatures Amid Macklemore Fallout

This post asks whether UNICEF should remove Pink from her ambassador role over her comments about Macklemore, not whether Macklemore's original remarks were appropriate.

The controversy traces back to September 4 and 5, when Macklemore, opening for Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour at MetLife Stadium, said "Free Palestine" and performed his song "Hind's Hall" while wearing a keffiyeh as Gaza-related images played on the stadium screens. The advocacy group StopAntisemitism criticized the performance, and Pink, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2015, reposted the group's statement without initially adding her own comment, which drew immediate backlash accusing her of taking Israel's side in the conflict.

Pink later posted a lengthy statement saying she was not calling for Macklemore to be silenced and had never asked for a refund or for anyone to be fired, adding that she is Jewish, considers Hamas a terrorist organization, and believes Palestinians "deserve a future that honors their humanity." A Change.org petition calling on UNICEF to remove her from the ambassador role, launched September 11 and arguing that ambassadors should "unify, not divide," passed 150,000 signatures by September 21. Actor Javier Bardem shared the petition on Instagram that same day. UNICEF has not publicly commented on Pink's status or said she violated any rule governing the role.

The case for:

  • Petition organizers argue a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador is expected to model neutrality and equal concern for children on all sides of a conflict, and say Pink's repost fell short of that standard.

  • Some critics say the specific post she amplified went beyond criticizing Macklemore's performance and read as taking a side in an active war, which they argue is incompatible with a humanitarian role.

The case against:

  • Pink has said repeatedly that she never called for Macklemore to be silenced or fired, and that her objection was to a specific performance choice rather than to Palestinian advocacy itself, which supporters say the petition mischaracterizes.

  • UNICEF has not accused her of violating any actual rule or code of conduct, and supporters argue removing an ambassador over a single reposted statement sets a low bar for future removals.

  • Her defenders note she has spent a decade doing UNICEF-related child health and nutrition work, which they say shouldn't be erased by one contested social media moment.

I'm not really sure what to make of it. Her repost of the criticism may have been more or less a mistake or poorly executed. It's not a good look in my opinion, but I've always liked her, so I want to believe her statements following the controversy.
