Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games' first new entry in the franchise since 2013, is drawing organized online backlash months before its November 19 release. Critics, largely on the political right, have focused on the game's depiction of gender equality, LGBTQ characters and racial diversity, with much of the criticism aimed at lead characters Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval and specific dialogue and styling choices shown in trailers.
The complaints echo criticism that surfaced when Rockstar released GTA VI's first trailer in late 2023, when some viewers objected to a Latina protagonist and what they described as an underrepresentation of white characters. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, has also drawn scrutiny after quietly removing references to diversity, equity and inclusion programs from its most recent annual report, even as the company's public materials still describe diverse teams as central to its success.
The game, priced starting at $80 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, has already been delayed twice, from an original fall 2025 target to May 2026 and now to November 19. Rockstar has not issued a direct response to the current wave of backlash.
The case for:
Critics argue that entertainment franchises are increasingly built around identity-focused messaging that can alienate part of the audience instead of just telling a story, and Rockstar's shift in language around diversity shows the company is aware of the sensitivity.
Some longtime fans say their concern isn't diversity itself but a fear that the satire and edge that defined earlier GTA games will be softened to avoid controversy.
The case against:
Defenders note the game is set in a fictionalized Miami, where the demographics shown reflect the real makeup of the region rather than an imposed agenda.
Rockstar has long used diverse, satirical casts to comment on American society, and earlier installments included multiple playable women and a wide range of characters without similar backlash.
Much of the current criticism is based on early trailers and leaked footage rather than the finished game, which has not yet been released or reviewed.
