Big Ten and SEC Move to Bar Former NFL Players From Returning to College Rosters
College football eligibility rules are in flux after a court ruling this year opened the door for players from the high school class of 2022 to seek a fifth year of college eligibility, even if they had already signed NFL contracts. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin moved to sign recently cut NFL rookies under that ruling, prompting SEC presidents and chancellors to hold an emergency call and issue a joint statement Monday warning that college athletes, not former professional athletes, should be at the heart of the conference.
The Big Ten followed on Tuesday, unanimously adopting a conference rule that bars any football player who has signed a professional contract, been on a professional roster at any point, or declared for the NFL Draft as an underclassman without withdrawing, from maintaining eligibility at a member school. The conference said it is also evaluating similar restrictions for other sports.
Whether either rule will hold up is unclear. If players have already secured a court injunction allowing their return, a coordinated conference-wide ban could invite the same kind of antitrust claims that opened this eligibility door in the first place, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
What supporters say:
SEC leaders argue that roster spots and scholarships should go to actual college athletes, not players who already collected NFL paychecks and reps before returning.
Letting NFL veterans back onto college rosters could hand certain programs a lopsided competitive edge over schools that don't pursue recently cut professionals.
What critics say:
The Big Ten's rule directly targets players who already won court-ordered eligibility, which could trigger the same antitrust fight that created this situation to begin with.
Blocking players from a season they legally earned in court punishes athletes for taking a shot at the NFL that didn't pan out, rather than fixing the underlying eligibility rules.
