NFL's Controversial 'Tush Push' Play Survives Another Year Without a Ban Vote

The NFL's short-yardage quarterback sneak play, popularly known as the "tush push," will remain part of the game for a fourth straight season after the league's Competition Committee confirmed no team submitted a proposal to ban or alter it ahead of this year's owners' meetings. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the play will not be on the agenda when owners convene, marking the first time in three years it has escaped the annual rule-change process.

The Philadelphia Eagles introduced the play in 2021 and have relied on it most heavily along with the Buffalo Bills in the seasons since. Competition Committee co-chair Rich McKay said the league's current priority is officiating the play consistently rather than banning it, citing ongoing difficulty for officials in identifying false starts and correctly timing the whistle once forward progress has stopped.

McKay was careful not to call the debate closed, noting that some owners and coaches remain uneasy with the physical pushing element of the play even as it stays legal for the 2026 season.

The case for:

  • The Eagles and Bills argue the play rewards precise execution, timing and offensive line strength, calling it a legitimate football play rather than a gimmick.

  • Supporters point out the play is nearly impossible to stop consistently, which they argue reflects good design and coaching rather than an unfair advantage.

The case against:

  • Critics, including opposing coaches, call the play repetitive and hard to watch, and question the safety of repeated pileups at the line of scrimmage.

  • Some officials worry the play is inconsistently enforced, since false starts and forward-progress calls are difficult to police on nearly every snap.
